The new Franz Kohfeldt Elementary School is a replacement school that is 92,791 square feet, housing kindergarten through fourth Grade. The building is situated on a small site, thus the design concept needed to have a compact but efficient linear layout. Incorporating natural daylighting and views to the outdoors was very important during design. The plan layout and use of an internal landscaped courtyard allows all classrooms and major corridors to have views with abundant natural daylight, while still maintaining an economical, compact floor plan.
The project delivery was through a CM@Risk in order to facilitate an accelerated schedule and to take advantage of using one CM@Risk for multiple projects in the district occurring at the same time. This resulted in an accelerated completion of the school in time for the fall semester by shaving two months off of the construction schedule.
